Valve adjustment

Message par thofri01 »

Hello.

My name is Thord Friström and I am from Sweden. I have bought a Renovated Citroen C4 F some years ago and made some maintenance . Now I would need some help with adjusting the valve clearance. I have never adjusted a side valve motor before and would be grateful to get some help if possible with some pictures. I have understood that the valve clearance should be 0,2 mm.
Unfortunately my French is very bad but I can take instructions in french.

Thord

Bonjour

Bienvenue .

WELKOM !

Bonjour.

Hello friend of SWEDEN

When do you live in SWEDEN because I know very well your country ?
The first time was in 1955, with a 2cv CITROEN , when the side to drive was on the left !After a lot of times because I had some customers for instance in HALMSTAT and an other near STOCKHOLM .

I give an answer about your message.
The valve clearence is:
-admission : 0,20
-escape : 0,25

Hello.

First, thank you moderator for translating my message. fantastic service :).

I live 25 kilometers south from Stockholm in Tumba. I am a 59 years old music teacher but also a great fan of Citroen. I have had a lot of them most hydralic such as Ds Cx Bx Xantia and C5. This car, C4F is very rare in Sweden and I bought it 6 years ago. It was sold first time to a Butcher in Copenhagen, Denemark and brought here as a wreck 20 years ago.

The trouble is backfire and I suspect a escape valve.
My problem: is that I want some help with wich screw I shall turn and how I shall think when adjusting the valves.

(I have never been working with side valve motors before.)

I am trying to study french on internet but it is very hard!!!

Cordialement
Thord

Cordialement
Thord

Hello Thord,
Welcome!

The lower picture shows the three parts, you will probably need to grind down some spanners to allow fitment to the tappet head, lock nut and tappet body flats unless you have some very slim spanners already!!

With the spark plugs removed, crank the starting handle to find compression stroke of a cylinder, check/adjust the two tappets below and then move on to the next.

Tip: It may be necessary to rotate the engine so the valve is lifted first, exposing the tappet body flats to initially 'shift' the lock nut and then commence the above procedure. The gap can sometimes decrease if there is slack in the tappet thread when the lock nut is tightened, therefore rotate a complete cycle and re check clearance on the compression stroke.

Any questions please just ask!

Hello Thord,
To set the valves I find it easiest.
We are talking about a four-cylinder engine whose cylinder 1 is at the front of the car.
This also we give the valves numbers ,cylinder 1 has valves 1 and 2 ,cylinder 2 has valves 3 and 4 and so on.
Now when you turn the crank clockwise and closes one of the four exhaust valves at the same cylinder opens the inlet valve (in Holland we call the tumble of the valves) for example, in cylinder 4 then you can adjust the valves 1 and 2 of cylinder 1.
Now if you make a mark on the pulley and then the crankshaft rotates a full revolution you can adjust the valves 7 and 8 of cylinder 4.
This makes you the same for cylinders 2 and 3.
For adjusting the valves tighten the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase play, or counterclockwise to lower clearance.
Note:you have engines where the tappet must be blocked and which do not rotate.
I wish you every success in adjusting the valves and have fun with the Citroen C4

Kind regards
Fred Roos

Hello.

Now I have succeeded to adjust the valves with your help. The Inlet valve lock nut to cylinder 3 was loose and the valve did not open at all.
Now it runs perfekt.
Thank you for your interest and help. :)
